Whisk Your Loved Ones Away This Winter

It goes without saying that the Winter of 2020 will be unlike anything else we have collectively experienced. Around the world, we are all facing the challenges of this difficult time and are making compromises every day to our personal, social and working lives. The experience for each of us is different, but one feeling we all share is that we can’t wait for the pandemic to be over, so our lives can return to some kind of normality….

Many of us are yearning to travel, to escape the mundanity of the walls we call home and take in different sights, sounds and smells, to make us feel more alive. We long for adventure, for something to reignite the spark of passion in our lives. Looking back to a time when we couldn’t wait to slow down, to stop dashing about and be still, we now look forward to packing a bag and setting off once again.

The other thing many of us have come to appreciate more is the beauty of spending time with loved ones, and especially at Christmas. Whilst much of the country will travel to spend 5 days with family at home, for the lucky few this is an opportunity to escape to somewhere further afield. So whether you have been tasked with finding somewhere large, luxurious and of course COVID-safe for your principal, or you simply enjoy letting the mind wander, we hope you will enjoy these five Private Winter Getaway ideas….

Stargaze in Iceland

Iceland is undoubtedly one of the most special places on Earth. As the last place to be populated by humans and with vast parts of the country uninhabited, it’s little surprise that Iceland is one of the most eco-friendly places in the world. These are just some of the reasons that Deplar Farm is a unique place to stay.

Stargaze in Iceland

Situated on the Troll Peninsula in the the Fljót Valley, this really is an off-the-grid location. With some of the highest average snowfall on the planet, it’s a dream spot for skiers, but the unrivalled natural beauty also makes this for photographers, artists and anyone needing to ‘reset.’ A converted sheep farm, Deplar Farm has black timber cladding, a living roof and thefloor-to-ceiling windows around the property that embrace the surrounding peaks. With two helipads on property, guests can arrive in style and have great access to rolling descents that lead all the way to the ocean.

Deplar Farm Situated on the Troll Peninsula in the the Fljót Valley

Iceland’s conditions mean the snow ranges from smooth, buttery slopes and corn snow to fresh powder, and the region’s midnight sun makes night skiing something to savour. Unlike many heli operations, things are very flexible at Deplar. If conditions aren’t right for flight, Deplar’s guides can take guests cat skiing or on-piste. For recovery, or for those not wishing the grace the slopes, Deplar’s geothermal-heated outdoor pool, Isopod flotation tanks, sauna, steam room, gym, yoga room, indoor and outdoor hot tubs and talented massage therapists keep guests in excellent condition… and the pool is the perfect place to watch for the Aurora Borealis.

Deplar Farm Indoor Hot Tub

Accommodation comes as 13 en-suite bedrooms, including 5 king suites, 4 king suites with queen sleeping lofts and balconies, 2 queen suites, 1 king suite with lofted lounge and private balcony and 1 bunkroom with four double beds and a double en suite bathroom.

Deplar Farm Lounge

Relax in the Media room or challenge others to billiards, foosball or ping pong. Or if you really have to work, check in with the office via the fully equipped conference room….before heading to the bar for a wind-down drink.

The height of cool in the Dolomites

Let us introduce you to FORESTIS a conceptual new 5* Tyrolean mountain retreat that just opened this Summer and is already officially one the coolet places to stay in the mountains.

FORESTIS Mountain Retreat Suite Window View

After travelling the world extensively, owners and hosts Teresa and Stefan Hinteregger wanted to create an attentive, traditional service for their guests, offering ‘peace as a new luxury’.

Located in South Tyrol, on the Southern slope of the Plose mountain at 1800 metres above sea level, FORESTIS is surrounded by a dense mountain forest where all 62 suites have panoramic views of the massif of the UNESCO world heritage Dolomites. The new luxury hideaway inspires year-round relaxation and regeneration, with a focus on time, nature and simplicity.

FORESTI Mountain Retreat Hill Sunset

In an area renowned for its health-boosting air and natural beauty, the building itself has an interesting past, having played home to those looking for healing, priests and clergy in the 1950’s and then a hotel – but with the new hosts, Forestis is now something really quite special.

All 62 suites at FORESTIS embrace nature. Due to their southern exposure, they are spoiled by the sun all day, whilst the natural materials of the interior, light earth tones and the style of the furnishings encourages a feeling of relaxation. They range from 50 m² in the older building, with 1 or 2 bedrooms and an outdoor terrace, to Tower Suites, also 55 m² in size with terraces but only 1 bedroom, although they boast the best views of the Dolomites from their panoramic windows….

FORESTIS Penthouse view of the Dolomites from their panoramic windows

In the two outer towers there is a two-story 200 m² penthouse suite which includes a spacious living area with an open fireplace, a custom-made sofa and a large dining table, smart TV and bar as well as a glass front that extends across the entire width of the bedroom, allowing guests to enjoy the most beautiful view of the Dolomites from bed. A staircase leads guests to the upper floor, on which there is a pool (3 x 6.5 Meters), a spruce wood sauna with a view of the Dolomites, sun loungers and a rain shower from which of course fresh spring water flows again.

FORESTIS penthouse suite pool

The impressive Spa extends over an area of 2,000 m² below the three towers and is distributed on two floors. Featuring an indoor pool, outdoor pool, brine steam bath (65 ° C), one Finnish sauna (85 ° C), a bio sauna (70 ° C), a textile sauna (Finnish sauna at 45 ° C) and one Outdoor sauna (Finnish sauna at 90 ° C) in a traditional South Tyrolean wooden house, the choice is extensive. The silent room with a hearth in the middle does exactly what it says on the tin – here guests can find silence and peace after their sauna session. Four treatment rooms, a ‘private spa’ for couple treatments and two cosmetic rooms and relaxation rooms, plus a state-of-the-art gym and yoga space make the spa complete.

FORESTIS spa

FORESTIS offers a wide range of activities including ski-in / ski-out where ski tours can be arranged where a guide can take you to all the secret skiing spots. The 45 kilometres of slopes of the Plose ski area have mixture of blue, red and black runs. In addition, there are Toboggan runs and winter hiking trails for non-skiers. There are four bike trails on the Plose, primarily due to extensive and dense forests. It is also possible to do paragliding or take a hot air balloon ride too!

But if all this is great, apart from the flying part, then we have just the option for you…

Steeped in history and glamour, this fantastic destination offers luxury accommodation with a wealth of things to see and do nearby.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor returned time and again to Belmond Hotel Splendido—and it’s easy to see why. A beautifully restored former 16th-century monastery on the hilltop, it is the epitome of Italian glamour. Dine deliciously on authentic Italian classics at La Terrazza. Unwind in the award-winning spa. Soak up the sun beside the shimmering pool. Every moment here will make you feel like a silver screen star.

There is a rich air of nautical adventure in Portofino. The Splendido’s spacious and luxurious private motorboat, Chris-Craft Corsair 36, is the perfect choice for up to eight guests and is available for excursions around the Gulf of Tigullio. Raise a toast while dishes brimming with local specialities are served up under starry skies. For those who prefer bigger boats, guests can step aboard a sleek motor yacht to set sail with the crew. Choose between a 62ft motor yacht (max eight persons + two crew) or a 79ft motor yacht (max 10 persons + two crew), both are breathtaking!

For those looking to be more active, why not rise early for a sunrise hike to La Portofinese, a sustainable farm set on the peaceful Portofino peninsula. On arrival, take part in a light pilates, yoga or meditation session, overlooking the Ligurian Sea.

Adventure in Portofino

Portofino, a protected region stretching from Camogli to Rapallo. Savour the scenery, then continue on to the grand and imposing Castello Brown. It was once home to British Consul, Montague Yeats Brown.

We highly recommend a tour of the Cinque Terre to uncover the best of this famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of Italy’s most precious treasures. Five picturesque villages—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore—are linked by a coastal path that winds through vineyards, sandy beaches and mesmerising rocky seascapes.

All of these activities can be arranged privately via the hotel, as well as many more. If you’re looking for something else, such as a boat charter, a villa rental or something more specialist, BBB has a range of contacts across Italy that will be delighted to help.

Fly me to the moon…

As the Corona Virus crisis continues, one thing is for certain – we are all missing the joy of travel. Whether it’s the chance to escape our everyday lives and jobs, the inspiration we get from experiencing new things or places, or the nourishment of the soul from breath-taking natural beauty and connecting with nature, most of us would be off in a heartbeat if we could.
And it’s not just the lack of travel itself that’s gets us down – it’s the uncertainty of when we will be able to travel again, and what that might look like when it does happen. As most of us dream of empty beaches, cool drinks in the sun, hiking through stunning terrains or getting lost in new and foreign cities, the thought that this may not be possible for some time is enough to make anyone feel down.

We especially have sympathy right now for our travel partners whose livelihoods rely on the world becoming ‘open’ again. We’re working on ways to support them and in our next blog, we’ll be bringing you some great updates and news about openings…
But for now, instead of wallowing in the many restrictions and sadnesses of the pandemic, we must remain positive and look to a brighter future that will (eventually) come.
As news brings ever-changing headlines about certain countries opening borders to certain people, flights possibly resuming and constantly shifting quarantine rules, we at BBB have chosen instead to put all that aside for now, ignore the press and take our brains and hearts away right now. We wanted to share with you some of the amazing places we have been over the weekend… we hope you’ll find them as uplifting as we do.

First up we headed east to Zhangye Danxia Geopark, China. Popular with nature lovers, geology enthusiasts and Instagrammers alike, these ‘Rainbow Mountains’ are quite simply spectacular. The colours were formed by the layering of sedimentary mineral deposits over millions of years, but it’s hard to look at the flowing reds, yellows, and oranges and not feel like you’re witnessing a kind of magic. Something to lift the spirits, just what we all need right now…

From natural wonders to manmade landmarks, we head over to Tamil Nadu in India. Most travelers head to North India for its Mughal palaces and forts, but the Southern state of Tamil Nadu is where most of the country’s major Hindu temples are found, including the brightly-colored Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple and the Meenakshi Temple Complex, which is so large it’s considered a mini-city! Occupying an area of 155 acres (63 ha) with 81 shrines, 21 towers, 39 pavilions and many water tanks, it is the world’s largest functioning Hindu temple. Hard to believe that it began life as far back as the 11th century, imagine all that it’s witnessed…

Next up we head to the amazing pools of Pamukkale in Turkey. These natural, snow-white hot springs overlooking the nearby city of Denizli put every Instagrammed infinity pool to shame. Pamukkale is also home to the impressively preserved ruins of the ancient Roman spa-city Hierapolis where you can bathe like an emperor among the submerged centuries-old columns. Now this is what we call self-care!

Continuing the theme of water, we head to Comino Island off Malta. Accessible by ferry only from mainland Ċirkewwa, Comino is Malta’s least inhabited island, with just 3 residents reported since 2017! Visitors to the island come to experience some of the clearest waters known to man, including the stunning blue lagoons. This is what we call isolation! [repetition from above]

There is something truly fascinating about things left by ancient civilisations. The Nasca Lines in Peru are a perfect example of this. These beautiful animal figures and geometric shapes etched by the ancient Nasca into Peru’s barren Pampa de San José are one of South America’s great mysteries. Visible only from the air or from a metal viewing tower beside the highway, some of the unexplained shapes are up to 200m in length. Theories about how these came about abound, but for art lovers or anthropologists, these offer some perspective on time during this difficult pandemic.

Heading back east, we took ourselves to Miho no Matsubara in Japan. Known as a place of particular beauty since the 1920’s, Miho no Matsubara is famous for its majestic pine trees, but people have come to realise that its black beaches are just as magnificent. We’d love to be sitting on that shore today, pondering life and what the months ahead may bring…

The Lofoten Islands of Norway are like something out of Game of Thrones. Technically located in the Arctic, the area contains some of the warmest temperatures due to an elevation anomaly. It’s also a great place to watch the Northern Lights in the winter season. But for now, we’re content just to perch on this clifftop and look out over this expanse of opportunity. If like a monarch from ancient times, this was our kingdom below, how would we rule it? How can we apply these thoughts to our navigation of the real world and how we create our best life?

The remote Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are located in Namibia’s coastal desert and are home to the world’s tallest sand dunes, including one that is nearly a quarter-mile high, and a stunning ‘forest’ of ancient trees. The trees are estimated to be approximately 900 years old, but they have not decomposed due to the dry climate. Deadvlei is a paradise for photographers as the contrast between the pitch-black trees and bleached-white pans, and the rusty-red dunes and deep blue sky, make for dramatic images. While we’re feeling apocalyptic, it’s wonderful to see nature’s answer and how long such beauty has lasted.

The ancient city of Bagan in central Myanmar is made up of thousands of Buddhist temples and pagodas and really is a sight to behold. One of the prettiest views is from above, best enjoyed from a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Waking up to this would surely set the rest of our day off perfectly!

The last place on our inspiration list is the Eternal Flame Falls at the Shale Creek Preserve, a section of Chestnut Ridge Park in Western New York. This beautiful waterfall has a small grotto at the base that emits natural gas, which can be lit to produce a small flame. This flame is visible nearly year round, although it can be extinguished and must occasionally be re-lit. We choose to see this as a reminder that things can exist and persevere through the most extraordinary circumstances, a symbol of hope…
Flights are starting to happen again and borders are starting to open. We will have to wait and see how the situation unfolds, but many travel companies are offering fully refundable terms on bookings, plus there are some great deals on accommodation as economies strive to recover and survive. So if you’d like to talk to us about any ideas, questions or possible future travel plans, we’d love to talk to you. As you know, we work with a host of specialists who deal with everything from wine trips to safari, skiing to visas and beyond. [We’d love to hear from you!](mailto:info@thebbbookl.com)

Partner Blog: Interiors by Sarah Ward

In a time where we are all spending so much time at home (and for many of us that includes working!) we thought you might like to read this rather brilliant blog by BBB Partner Sarah Ward. Her interior design skills are second to none, so why not adopt some of this stellar advice in your home? If you’d like an introduction to Sarah and her team, about this or any other interiors projects, please drop us a line and we’ll be pleased to introduce you…

DESIGNATE SOME SPACE
Don’t let the boundaries begin to blur and temptation allow you to set up your office in bed. Do assign an area designated for working. Be territorial if you must! Even if you have a small space and do not have the luxury of separate floors, this can still be achieved with some clever storage, spatial planning and revised layouts. I love creating zones to establish division between work and play. I find there are certain areas in my home where I cannot focus, and others where I can. Natural light is a big thing for me and I’m not comfortable with a desk facing a wall as I tend to feel claustrophobic. I know my focus is enhanced when I limit the background noise to a bare minimum. Work out what makes you comfortable and calm and arrange your space to work for you.

CREATE HARMONY, PEACE AND COHESIVENESS
Generally, there should be a perfect balance of calm and loud within design. Warm undertones, with lots of light and uncluttered symmetry instantly help to make a space feel balanced, interwoven with unique details, ornate patterns and sculptural aesthetics. It can mean bringing order to a living room or kitchen that may feel a little chaotic, while still keeping the space looking interesting. I love to travel [when the universe allows!] and always brin finds and objects home with me. Travelling creates important memories and inspiration, and integrating these memories add interesting layers to any interior. This also creates a sense of being surrounded by one’s favourite things and so brings security, fond memories and joy.

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME
Do set yourself up properly so you can relax into a proper routine; you need to have your calm and relaxation spaces to make sure work doesn’t take over your life. Away from your place of work, the possibilities for self-expression extend well beyond a small pot plant on your desk. With no colleagues to consider, you have the ability to relax and get comfy. Relish the freedom to open windows and allow fresh air in or crank up the heating; wear comfy, loose clothing and cosy cashmere socks; listen, or sing to your heart’s content, to your favourite 80s band or, like me, work in silence.

LET IN THE LIGHT
As much as you possibly can. If you are able to, try and position your desk next to a window for some much-required vitamin D. Light really is one of the most important aspects; it stimulates the mind and can completely transform the look and feel of a space.

THE GARDEN IS YOUR TIMEOUT AND A PLACE TO REFLECT
Schedule time in your day to get outside and connect intentionally to your mind, body and spirit: mindfulness, yoga, a workout or just a simple move-about. This breaks up the day and fresh air is so good for the soul – try and add this structure and routine to your day. If you are limited with outdoor space, do make a conscious effort to move away from your desk from time to time; it’ll help you to manage your energy which is important to keep the mind fresh and productive. Get up and take a walk, take the stairs, or take a lunch break away from screens. When outside temperatures become more favourable and it becomes more conducive to spending time outside, I’m going to move my workspace al fresco – I love to watch the flora and fauna go by.

ENJOY THE ENDLESS CULINARY POSSIBILITIES OF YOUR KITCHEN
Away from the office, unshackled from the tyranny of the same supermarket sandwich, enjoy the endless culinary possibilities being at home affords. Pick up those dusty cookbooks and plan healthy lunches to pick you up for an afternoon at your desk. I’m currently working my way through A Love of Eating: Recipes from Tart London; colourful, fresh and wholesome meals.
I tend to compare the design process to preparing a sumptuous meal. Each scheme is personal and unique to meet the client’s brief – combining different colours, layers and textures – so it’s just a question of gathering the specific ingredients for that particular palate, or palette, and away we go…
If you’d like to talk to Sarah and Rosie about an interior design project, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Finances in a time of COVID-19

With the world overtaken by the current healthcare crisis of COVID-19, we all face much uncertainty and many challenges ahead, both personal and professional. Keeping ourselves and our loved ones healthy is of course the main priority for everyone right now, but when this is over, and it will be over, we face the question… what then?

Some of us may not have jobs to return to and many of those who do return to employment will face a different landscape and work culture for sure, perhaps with an altered salary too. But for those who are self-employed or run small businesses (or even large ones), it can feel like a lonely survival battle as work changes shape and income wavers.

We wanted to share with you some advice from BBB Partners ‘We’ll Mind Your Own Business’ (WMYOB) who specialise in accounting and bookkeeping, tax calculations, submissions and tax credits, payroll and pensions management, meaning they are perfectly positioned to advise BBB members across a variety of financial situations. WMYOB sent us their guidance as finance professionals and we hope you will find useful.

Job Retention Scheme and Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)

The Government has announced that under the Job Retention Scheme, all UK Employers will be able to access support to continue paying part of their employees’ salary – where they would have been otherwise laid off. This does mean that the employee must take up a “furloughed” status and must not conduct any work for the business during this time. If this is the case, then HMRC will reimburse 80% of the worker’s wage costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. It is the employer’s choice whether they ‘top-up’ the employee’s salary by the further 20%, or indeed beyond the cap – but this is not compulsory.

The scheme is due to run for at least three months from 1st March 2020 but may be extended if necessary. Although originally, it was only related to those workers who were in employment as of 28th February 2020, as of 15th April 2020, the eligibility of the scheme extended to 19th March 2020. However, an RTI submission notifying payment in respect of that employee must have been made to HMRC on or before 19th March 2020 in order for them to qualify.

Employers will be able to use a portal to claim for 80% of ‘furloughed’ employees’ usual monthly wage costs up to the cap of £2,500, plus the associated Employer National Insurance contributions and minimum automatic enrolment pension contributions. These contributions on any additional top-up salary, as decided by the employer, will not be funded through the scheme though.

It is unlikely that any contract in place with employees will contain a clause around furloughing and therefore it is important to discuss these changes directly with employees and gain their written approval over their furloughed status. There should be written evidence that this communication has taken place and both parties agree to the implications. This should also include the date that the status was changed and you should ensure they undertake no further work beyond this date to be eligible for the scheme.

It is possible for an employee who has more than one job to be furloughed. Each job is to be treated as separate and the cap will apply to each employee individually. If the individual’s pay varies and they have been employed for a full 12 months prior to the claim, there are two options available, whereby you can claim the higher of:
– The same month’s earnings from the previous year (ie April 2019)
– The average monthly earnings from the 2019-20 tax year.

If they have been with you for less than a year, it would simply be the average earnings for the months completed so far, and if they joined in February, use a pro-rata calculation for their earnings to date.

You can submit one claim at least every 3 weeks – which is the minimum length an employee can be furloughed for. In order to make a claim, although WMYOB can of course assist you with this as part of their services, you will need: a PAYE reference number, number of employees being furloughed, the claim period, amount claimed, bank account/sort code for payments to be made into, contact name and phone number. Payments will be made by BACS into the provided UK bank account once they have been received and reviewed.

HMRC do retain the right to retrospectively audit all aspects of your claim.

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme

The Chancellor also announced a support package to those who are Self-Employed and have lost income due to COVID-19. This scheme will allow those who are Self-Employed to claim a taxable grant worth 80% of their trading profits for the next 3 months.

This scheme is not open yet and HMRC will contact you if you are eligible for the scheme and invite you to apply online.

To qualify, you must:
– Have submitted your Income Tax Self-Assessment for the tax year 2018-19 (If you have not submitted this return yet, the deadline has been extended to 23rd April 2020)
– Traded in the Tax Year 2019-20
– Are trading when you apply, or would do except for COVID-19
– Intend to continue to trade in the tax year 2020-21
– Have lost trading profits due to COVID-19.

You must also have trading profits of less than £50,000 and demonstrate that more than half your income comes from Self-Employment.

You will receive a tax grant up to 80% of the average profits from the tax years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

In addition, or in replacement, of this scheme, there is further help available through the deferment of Self-Assessment payments due in July 2020 until January 2021, increased amounts of universal credit and the business interruption loan scheme.

Should you have any further questions about these schemes or anything else that WMYOB might be able to help with, please do get in touch.

Deferring VAT and Income Tax payments

The government has announced a 3-month deferment in Valued Added Tax (VAT) payments for all UK businesses. Consequently, any payment which would have been due at any point in the period 20th March 2020 and 30th June 2020 will now have been deferred automatically. You will now have up until the end of the 2020/21 Tax year to pay any liabilities accumulated during this period. VAT refunds and reclaims will be paid by the government as normal.

It was also announced by the Chancellor, that anyone who has Self-Assessment payments due on 31st July 2020 will also have these deferred – until 31st January 2021 in this case.

In addition to the above, HMRC has also extended the scope and availability of its ‘Time to Pay’ service. This will allow companies to come to a specific arrangement with HMRC on the payment of it’s other tax liabilities. WMYOB can assist in making the call and negotiating with HMRC in this instance if helpful.

Support with Business Rates

The Chancellor also introduced business rates holidays for businesses in sectors that the Government considered could be most adversely affected by the outbreak.

These include:
– Business rates holiday for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.
– Cash grants for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.
– Businesses that pay little or no business rates because of small business rate relief (SBBR) or rural rate relief (RRR) are eligible for a one-off grant of £10,000 to help meet their ongoing business costs.

In almost all cases, your local authorities will send through updated business rates to you and therefore this will occur automatically. If this has not been the case, or you feel you qualify for any of the above please do get in touch and we would be happy to review this alongside you.

Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)

You could also be eligible to access the new Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme – which allows access to working capital up to £5 million. The government will pay to cover the first 12 months of interest payments and any initial set-up fees – although some providers have already waivered these. To give lenders further confidence in continuing to provide finance to SMEs the government will provide lenders with a guarantee of 80% on each loan (subject to a per-lender cap on claims).

There are currently 40+ lenders who are signed up to this scheme and you should apply with them directly. WMYOB will be delighted to assist in putting the application pack together – which will have to include a borrowing proposal which were it not for the current pandemic, would still be considered viable.

**WMYOB** are happy to discuss these issues or anything else with BBB members and Partners, just get in touch for an intro to the most suitable person on the team at info@thebbbook.com.

Partner Blog – Bold & Reeves

BBB property experts Bold & Reeves wrote a blog for us about the best way to maintain your principal’s property and why they really are a PA’s best friend…..

Often our first point of contact with a new client is through their PA.

Typically, there’s a period of reconnaissance as they assess any existential threat to having Bold & Reeves take care of ‘the property question’ on behalf of their boss… who often has a large and complex property portfolio to manage.

And usually, the PA plays a key role in that process.

But is that the right way for high-powered PAs to spend their time?

Our research suggests that working with Bold & Reeves not only alleviates PAs of some of the biggest drains on their time, energy and their boss’s money, but also delivers a range of systemic benefits that add value throughout their role and organization.

Because as many PAs find, if you don’t specialize in doing it every day (like we do at Bold & Reeves), managing prime residential property can be, well… a bit of a nightmare.

We’ve worked hard to refine our prime residential offering, as we seek to demonstrate support for, and compatibility with, professional family offices, PA’s and their associated staff.

Far from reducing the relevance of the PA role, Bold & Reeves has the following objectives in mind as we work with a client’s team:

  • Help PAs and their teams shine in front of their boss by saving money
  • Free up time so PAs can focus on adding value in other key areas
  • Reduce the need for PAs to hire unnecessary members of staff
  • Increase privacy and confidentiality, while outsourcing inefficient tasks
  • Consolidate all admin, maintenance and management relating to property
  • Reduce PAs exposure to a complex array of avaricious suppliers
  • Provide highly specialized expertise for a highly specialized area

It’s commonplace for PAs to tell us stories about being ripped off by charlatans, or simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of suppliers there are to manage, and the subsequent paperwork and financial outgoings that come with even the simplest of tasks.

Bold & Reeves regularly support our client’s PA’s with the resolution of issues in the following areas:

    • Boiler breakdowns
    • Water damage
    • Plant-related issues
    • Support with tech/digital devices
    • Welcoming or preparing a property when you can’t
    • Attending the property when you can’t
    • Keeping a schedule of costs on your behalf
    • Providing full at-a-glance visibility of all activity in the property

Many of the interventions we make are in owner-absent properties. Often a PA’s boss will own four or five homes. Typically these are well maintained and functioning to a high standard, however as soon as you have multiple locations to manage, you enter difficult territory – for a home unoccupied, is a home at risk of damage. And often that means eye-watering vacuums of time and money.

Says Bill Shipton, Bold & Reeves Founder & CEO:

‘47% of all unscheduled home ownership costs in our sector take place in owner-absent properties, where little or no maintenance takes place for unusually long periods of time – hence a delay in awareness of the issues, and with diagnostics and solutions. PA’s can take advantage of our services and be wholly reassured about an entire portfolio of properties and the potential issues therein, are being monitored around the clock while they, and their principle, are away.’

This kind of constant, hands on focus speaks directly to many of the issues that PAs have shared with us over the years, and is the type of insurance policy that helps many PAs sleep better at night.

Mr Shipton goes on:

‘Not only would a PA know about the issues as soon as they happen – they will have every confidence that we will attend the property straight away, and restore working order at minimal cost. We have heard of PA’s having to get on a plane to sort out plumbing issues, and many instances of PA’s being taken to the cleaners by dishonest and inconsiderate service providers. By using Bold & Reeves these issues are immediately circumnavigated, and all the duties of care surrounding prime residential properties, solved.’

No one needs persuading of the benefits of servicing their car, yacht or plane… and like wise, prevention is always better than cure in matters related to health and wellbeing. But there hasn’t been an equivalent service for the home – until now.

Why not treat prime residential property in the same way, especially in the light of the value of such assets, the unique requirements involved in maintaining them… not to mention the emotional attachment many owners invest in them?

If any of this resonates please contact Georgina Peech on 020 7408 7590, for an initial conversation.

And check out the testimonials below – as further evidence that Bold & Reeves are raising the bar:

‘My principle sense of value from Bold & Reeves lies in the fact that I am less exposed to exploitation from my supplier network. Many tradespeople who walk into a seven-story home in central London double the price of any work immediately. I no longer have to mitigate that risk as all our contractors are a part of the Bold & Reeves curated partner network, and our residential asset manager handles all suppliers on our behalf.

Having Bold & Reeves onside reduces my need for permanent staff, or at least for a permanent house manager. My residential asset manager is usually somewhere local to me and can arrive in minutes if there is an emergency. Many of the duties traditionally performed by house managers have been absorbed by the Bold & Reeves offering.’

Having the use of the Bold & Reeves app simplifies and expedites my ability to report an issue in my house and get it dealt with – often without even having to have a conversation. My husband and I are incredibly busy and we have four children, which means we are hard to get hold of. Interfacing through the app, and seeing that translate into fast and effective action, the results of which are then relayed back to us on the same platform, which alleviates pressure and supports our daily flow.’

Simplicity is a key feature of the Bold & Reeves service. I may pay a premium for it – but you get what you pay for. I have one point of contact, no complex supplier network to manage, and I pay one invoice that is always fair and easy to understand.’

A big advantage to the Bold & Reeves service is anonymity, which relates directly to security and peace of mind. My residential asset manager represents me and my home, and Bold & Reeves take care of the admin and any paperwork. This means I get to stay off the radar, which supports my privacy and my family life, and saves me time in the process.’

BBB’s Africa Recommendations

Africa is a place of rich and diverse culture and history – it’s the second largest continent in the world and boasts perhaps the world’s largest number of animals roaming freely, with everything from big cats to camels, reptiles to birds. Huge mountains, endless plains, jungle, dessert and stunning coastline, Africa has it all. It’s therefore no surprise that millions of people travel each year to this incredible place, many of whom to experience the natural wonders it has to offer.

The variety of luxurious places to stay has grown hugely over the last couple of decades, so whilst you might be living in the wild, there’s no need to ‘rough it’!

It would be impossible to show you everything in one blog, so this is by no means everything we can offer you, but below you’ll find a very brief introduction to five incredible BBB partners in Africa, from Ethiopia to Zanzibar and beyond…

Zimbabwe – Ruckomechi Camp

Ruckomechi is known as The Elephants Favourite Camp. It is a Wilderness property located in a private concession in Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe. The camp is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River, overlooking Zambia and the Rift Valley Mountain Range, which offers a wonderful silhouette backdrop at sundown.

Ruckomechi offers something for everyone – from game drives to nature walks, river cruises, catch and release fishing, phenomenal birding and just the chance to sit back and enjoy your surroundings and the passing game.

Ruckomechi has ten spacious tents, including two family units – the tents are both comfortable and luxurious with uninterrupted views of the river in front of you, through the safety of the gauze windows. Elephants wander between the tents, snacking on the canopy of Ana pods overhead. In the evening, the communal bonfire is light and the stars come out to play.

Kenya – Sirai House

This magnificent, privately-owned home located in the foothills of snow-capped Mount Kenya offers unrivalled views across the game-rich plains of the Borana Conservancy.

With six beautiful suites and facilities that would rival any of the top hotels, Sirai House offers guests a stay in true luxury, including a plush cinema, extensive library, stunning Club Room, not to mention the in-house Executive Chef, who creates magic in the kitchen daily.

The highlight of staying at Sirai House is of course the game experiences: enjoy the views from your sun-lounger of their own watering hole; explore the reserve from horseback, helicopter or in their custom made Land Rover; or simply walk the game-drives with one of their expert guides. Guests are bound to be amazed!

Botswana – Jack’s Camp

Founded by explorer Jack Bousfield in the 1960s, Jack’s Camp sits in a striking spot on the edge of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans, gazing over glittering salt pans and shimmering expanses of sun-scorched earth.

It’s an oasis of style and old-world glamour in a landscape of savage beauty, and more elegant and enchanting than you could imagine in such a remote landscape.

There aren’t many camps in Africa quite like Jack’s. The ten, Bedouin-style tents are scattered below a soft canopy of molokwane palms, each one an ode to safaris of old. Expect Persian rugs atop polished floors, vintage lithographs and muslin-draped walls, and the comfiest four-posters we’ve ever slept in.

Outside, private verandas and velvet clad chairs look out over the ethereal landscape, where glittering salt and sun-baked plains stretch as far as the eye can see.

Zanzibar – Zanzibar White Sands

Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is a luxury boutique hotel located on the pristine sands of Paje beach, on the East coast of Zanzibar – a sanctuary of peace and harmony without compromise.

With luxury standards, the resort promises an unforgettable barefoot luxury experience. Their spacious luxury villas (from 500 sqm), with their pool and recreational area, ensure the utmost privacy in a natural setting, while the amenities deliver the highest standard of service, including spa treatments and facilities (sauna, hammam), a restaurant, a rooftop champagne bar, a beach bar and a lounge, as well as a high-end kitesurfing and watersports centre.

The large resort (4 hectares) hosts only 11 villas to ensure the maximum space for each of our Guest in an undisturbed harmony of senses. It’s also ideal for kite surfers as it is on Paje beach; one of the best kite surfing locations in the world.

Ethiopia – Bale Mountain Lodge

Bale Mountain Lodge is a 11 bedroom eco-safari lodge in the Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) of south central Ethiopia. The park is full of rare mammal and amphibian species, endemic birds and spectacular flora. It is also home to 60% of the remaining Ethiopian Wolves, the world’s most rare carnivore plus Black Maned Lions, Giant Forest Hogs and Mountain Nyala.

The location of the lodge has been selected to provide guests with an excellent opportunity to experience a pristine wilderness that incorporates the largest tract of Afro-alpine moorland remaining on the continent, the majority being over 3800m above sea level, whilst living lower down in a stunning cloud forest which offers access to the rift valley and wider local attractions.

UNESCO has estimated that more mammal species would become extinct were the habitats of the Bale Mountains to degrade than if any other area of equivalent size on the globe were to disappear. This unique wildlife experience, combined with the pioneering luxury Eco Lodge, will make Bale Mountain Lodge an unforgettable stay.

Home Away From Home

Many successful people travel a lot for work. Sometimes they travel alone, sometimes their families come too. Often their PA or other personal staff also travel a lot, accompanying and supporting the primary of getting things set up in their absence, or ahead of their arrival. To the uninitiated, this sounds very glamorous, a dazzling whirlwind of hotel rooms, room service and international travel. But to those who do this often, it can be anything but. You start to miss the space, cooking and creature comforts of ‘home.’ Long work hours and eating on the run mean your health can suffer and sleep becomes of primary importance.

At BBB, we understand the needs of busy individuals and their superstar PA’s, so we have spoken to our various partners and want to suggest here our top solutions to create a ‘home away from home,’ whether that’s accommodation abroad, London residences for family or business colleagues coming into town, packing and removals services for longer travel or how to recruit the extra staff to make things work. We’re here to help, so if any of the below appeals or you have any other requests, however wild or weird, just get in touch with us at info@thebbbook.com

We have a great number of contacts, listed in the app and otherwise, who offer reliable, well priced and first class services, many of whom we can secure preferential rates with. So get in touch and we’d be happy to help.

A touch of glamour in La-La-Land…

LA is a whirlwind of lights, cars, money and Hollywood stars. This is great, but when you’re there to work, you also need some calm. But this shouldn’t have to mean you miss out on the glamour entirely…

The Bungalows at the Beverly Hills Hotel were first introduced in 1915 to accommodate families that wanted more space and privacy and they remain an important part of the character of this iconic hotel. They are known the world over for their history with Hollywood royalty and colourful anecdotes, which include Elizabeth Taylor spending six of her eight honeymoons there, Howard Hughes living there on and off for over 30 years and Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich each calling them home for over a year…

Bungalow 1 was a favourite place to stay of none other than Marilyn Monroe. She spent more time in this bungalow than any other, so it’s only right that the property’s thoughtful new design incorporates aspects of Marilyn Monroe’s life and whimsical elements reflective of her most celebrated movie roles.

With curvy furniture, bright and abstract floor coverings, colorful travertine stones, and gold-leafed ceilings, this feminine space is both playful and sophisticated. Strong Jean Michel Frank influences pay homage to her use of his designs in her own home, including extensive use of parchment to envelop aspects of each room. The one-bedroom bungalow suite includes a living room with dining area, fireplace and half bath; master suite, full master bath and dressing room and private terrace. The main suite also connects to two adjoining bedrooms making it a three bedroom bungalow (2,620 sq. Ft.).

Special features of this stunning property include a Chanel N°5 fragrance bar and bath amenities, a library featuring classic Marilyn Monroe films and books, a Marilyn Monroe Champagne Bath Bubble Experience featuring a Some Like it Hot bubble bath (Ceara pure Atlantic sea salt from the coast of Brazil and Sweet Orange and Grapefruit Oils), Marilyn’s Menu (available via in-room dining), inspired by an interview that appeared in the 1952 issue of Pageant Magazine.

The hotel itself is located in the coveted zip code of 90210, within easy proximity of the business and entertainment centres of LA. Los Angeles International Airport is just 40 minutes away, and the Pacific not much further. Within the hotel grounds, guests are surrounded by 12 acres of tropical gardens and exotic flowers, giving an air of tranquility as a welcome retreat from the hustle of the city.

Weekend escapes to Barrio Alto…

Make The Lumiares your home away from home in Lisbon. In the heart of fashionable Barrio Alto, the hotel is stylishly designed and each of the 5 rooms apartment style room sizes, ranging fro Studio to Penhouse, features a kitchen, making relaxed dining at the end of a busy day possible across the property. For those who prefer not to cook however, the Lumi Rooftop has wonderful views and delicious cuisine, or take a walk to one of the many fantastic local restaurants.

The hotel has free high-speed WiFi throughout, making working from the room convenient and economical.

The hotel’s small but perfectly formed spa and fitness area offers an integrated health, wellness and relaxation haven with a selection of high quality spa treatments, sauna, steam room and fitness facilities. They have some of the best therapists in Lisbon on hand to deliver a broad range of treatments, so if destressing is a must, they have it covered.

With open-plan living areas, dining rooms, fully equipped kitchens and up to four bedrooms, the residences sleep 2-9 people and offer a new level of luxury living within the City of London. The stand-out accommodations – including the Tower Residence – offer extensive private terraces with stunning views overlooking the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

London’s leading designers, including Martin Kemp Design, LINLEY, Richmond International and Fox Linton, have created elegant and refined interiors with an individual style and character for each residence, drawing inspiration from the heritage building’s origins in the 1920s.

Run away to the South of France…

What could be more perfect than a private villa at La Reserve Ramatuelle this summer? Tucked away in the hills, right next to Saint Tropez, the villas are truly a hidden gem. There are just 14 private villas, all surrounded by pine trees and interrupted only by the tranquil sound of cicadas…

Clinging to the hillside, nestled in large, fragrant private gardens, all the villas look out onto the infinite blue expanses of the Mediterranean. Each has its private heated swimming pool, some of them with a pool house: an azure blue oasis making a striking contrast with the subtle green shades of the umbrella-like stone pines and the silvery leaves of the olive trees. And of course that supreme sense of peacefulness, barely troubled by a playful breeze, that gives one the impression of being in a unique bubble of serenity. This is really voluntary exile…

The villas have three to six spacious rooms ensuring individual comfort and privacy: en suite bathrooms for each room, a fully equipped dressing room… Whether as a family or among friends, this is a place designed for the sheer joy of being together. All are also fully serviced, including a dedicated housemaid, as well as private chef services and other bespoke options, to make each stay memorable and unique.

Guests also have access to all the hotel’s facilities, including a wonderful Spa, three sumptuous restaurants and a private beach on the Plages de Pampelonnes.

What to buy the person who has it all….

It’s that time of year again… the season where we eat our own body weight in mince pies, have one glass too many at the office party and no doubt don a dodgy jumper or two. If you’re organised (which as superstar PAs, we know you are!) you’ll have almost completed most of your personal shopping by now, have sent out the cards and are already thinking about the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions… But no matter how well you plan and how far in advance you start shopping, there is always that one person who is almost impossible to buy for. It might be your other half, it might be that uncle you see once a year or it might just be your favourite teenager. Sadly, we dont know Uncle Henry (and we still find teenagers a mystery) so we can’t help you there…. But we can offer some advice on gift giving for the person who has it all. Perhaps your principal has asked for inspiration…. Here are our top suggestions on what to give to the person who has everything…

Let’s start with an easy one – a watch. But this is no ordinary watch. Meet Dutch watchmaking house Christiaan Van der Klaauw, who allow you to totally customise your luxurious timepiece. This incredible company made the two best ladies watches for Van Cleef & Arpels and are regarded as one of the top  watchmaking houses in the world. These pieces are also highly exclusive – they only make around 50-60 timepieces each year worldwide, so only 60 buyers in the world maximum have the chance to own one! In case this wasn’t enough, through our special connections BBB is pleased to offer an amazing 10% off the total price and give buyers the chance to meet with the owners either in Amsterdam or London to collect their piece! Check out the incredible configurator now for some inspiration (if you’d like to discuss further, contact us.

Along similar lines, perhaps an impossible-to-get handbag is just the ticket? Whether it’s a Birkin or a Kelly, or perhaps the Zofia Chylak, we have you covered. Our contacts either have access to the front of the queue, or they have connections with collectors around the world who’d be willing to sell. So that waitlist just got a lot shorter…
Our next two suggestions follow the trend of experiences over objects… our busy minds, fast paced lives and lack of time to spend with loved ones are seeing us favour activities and trips with those we love, over material items we quickly grow bored of. It has been going this way for a little while now, but the trend sees no sign of changing any time soon. Immersive theatre, light shows, multi-sensory events and other forms of escapism have been taking over, so perhaps booking something to share with a friend is the best way to show someone you care?

Secret Cinema has for years been a hot ticket and nothing has changed with the latest production of ’Stranger Things.’ Immerse yourself into Hawkins, Indiana and lose the stresses of everyday live whilst wandering the mall and uncovering what really happened… A lesser talked about but highly reviewed show right now is Bjork’s Vulnicura VR. Located in Hackney, step outside yourself into 55 minutes of Bjork-inspired beauty, Vistiors will step into Bjork’s creative genius, exploring the Icelandic locations that inspired her music in a utopia of sound and colour. The otherworldly experience is available for just a few weeks, so book in fast to give the music fan in your life a gift to remember.

If you’re looking for an experience, but something longe than a night, we can’t recommend highly enough some of the fantastic once-in-a-lifetime trips from our travel partners. For example… ‘Vinotherapy’ is an invitation-only discovery trip of Bordeaux, where guests can stay in at a private wine estate, explore a host of vineyards and sellers, meet growers and producers, spend the day aboard a private Riva and even meet an oyster farmer, followed by a tasting… how romantic! In ‘The Keys to Vatican City,’ travellers discover everything this incredible place has to offer, with exclusive access to miss the crowds and queues. A private visit to the Vatican Library, a blessing from the Pope, off-limits areas of the Vatican and a private Mass are just some of the highlights. Or for the something truly unique, perhaps the ‘DestiNAtion You’ experience is the one…. The incredible opportunity sees your DNA being processed by some of the most highly skilled geneticists in the world, to determine your precise ancestral origins and genetic history. Our travel team then tailor-make a trip for you based exactly to your DNA, taking you to discover the places where your ancestors came from and essentially, what makes you, you! If you’d like to discuss any of these incredible trips, please email us.

If your person is keen on ancestry, but doesn’t have the time to cavort around the world, perhaps Genealogica are more up their street. They undertake intensive ancestral research over many months too build up a comprehensive history of your origins, more along the family tree vein than DNA… coming from the team behind one of the world’s most well-known productions, with access to some of the leading experts in geneology, this really would make an exceptional gift!

Christmas is also a time to be thankful though for all the many ways in which we are lucky, and to remember those less fortunate than ourselves. For some who have it all, the best way they can celebrate is to spread the joy and to give. There are a number of organisations out there offering help (and requiring donations of money or time), as well as gifting sites that give back to the community. Some of our favourites are Good Gifts who allow you to buy something much needed in the name of someone you love (and you’ll get a card to present to the lucky friend), Oxfam Unwrapped who do something very similar and Crisis, where you can sponsor the Christmas of a homeless person, offering them a hot meal, a shower, a health check and a bed. BARTS Christmas Appeal is also quite special, asking people to give a gift to someone in hospital over this season. It shouldn’t be so, but many older people have no families or visitors whilst they are in hospital, which at any time of year is horrible, but especially at Christmas – not to mention the stresses of children and their families. Many hospitals accept donations, both in form of gifts or money, and we think any form of support for these initiatives is excellent.

Overall this Christmas, when trying to avoid the trappings of Amazon and the stress of Westfield, we hope this has provided some interesting food for thought, if nothing else. If you’d like to discuss any of these ideas with us, or anything else, please just get in touch. And Happy Christmas one and all, see you in 2020!
