How Do the Elite Access Healthcare?

And What Is Concierge Medicine?

Have you ever wondered the secret to priority, VIP access to the very best doctors and hospitals? If you have visited Los Angeles recently, you’ll know that any international, UHNW client will have a membership for this – to their very own concierge doctor; which is now massively growing in popularity both in and outside of the USA.

Prompt access to healthcare is a top priority for international citizens – who seek the highest quality healthcare wherever they go. In recent years, concierge medicine has grown in popularity because not only is it membership-based (providing exclusivity), it can offer patients 24/7 access to their own personal doctor. Concierge medicine is well established in the US, but many clients now seek concierge doctors in London; which has become a major hub for an UHNW, international clientele.

Understanding Concierge Medicine

Concierge medicine, often known as ‘retainer medicine’, originated in 1996 in the USA and is an advanced healthcare model where patients pay an annual membership fee to register with their private GP or ‘concierge doctor’, in exchange for a much higher level of service and a smaller, exclusive patient list. This type of care delivery model is a more exclusive form of care that involves 24/7 physician access, same-day appointments, and highly personalised, comprehensive care with expedited specialist and hospital access. Concierge doctors are primary care physicians– e.g. General Practitioners/Family Doctors.

Concierge physicians have a limited, exclusive patient list due to being membership; which enables focus on providing highly personalised care, preventative or regenerative medicine, and priority referrals to secondary care practitioners or hospitals. For example, at HealthClic, we have one of the most exclusive patient lists, with a ratio of 50 families only registered with one HealthClic concierge doctor (private G.P.).

Concierge Doctors in London & UK

Since 2015, Concierge Medicine has also emerged in the UK, offering a higher quality healthcare experience which is beyond the traditional UK private sector, which is now overburdened with patients and waiting lists that are simply unsuitable for an UHNW clientele. The first concierge practice which opened in the UK was HealthClic, offering traditional, American-style concierge medicine services to London’s elite, catering to individuals seeking a higher level of attention and personalised healthcare.

Benefits of Concierge Medicine

  1. Personalised Attention: Concierge doctors have a membership therefore significantly smaller patient lists, in order to devote more time and attention to each individual. This individualised approach fosters a strong doctor-patient relationship and enables a deeper understanding of the patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and medical goals. At HealthClic, the patient-to-doctor ratio is 50 families to 1 doctor. This is one of the best ratios in the world amongst leading concierge medical practices.
  2. Comprehensive Health Support: Concierge doctors act not only on immediate medical issues but focus on long-term wellness. They provide comprehensive support including lifestyle recommendations, nutritional guidance, exercise programs and stress management techniques to help patients achieve optimal health and well-being.
  3. Precision Medicine: Precision medicine is practised by concierge physicians, more so than any other group of doctors in the world, which is defined as an innovative, tailored medical approach that considers individual genetic, environmental and lifestyle differences to prevent and treat disease. Whole genome sequencing testing (first made famous by Steve Jobs) is something commonly offered by concierge doctors, as it can help them do just this, and allow them to work proactively on their patients’ health based on what their hereditary health risks are.
  4. Expedited, Timely Access to Care: Concierge doctors prioritise rapid access to medical services for their patients by offering same-day appointments, in order to ensure patients receive timely medical attention and need not wait. Some concierge medicine practices, such as HealthClic, offer 24/7 access to their patients along with prompt virtual consultations. Concierge doctors have been ahead of the game in tele-diagnosis for a long time, and this sets them apart, where member patients have direct access to their Concierge Doctors and thus benefit from prompt medical advice.
  5. Longer Appointment Times: Concierge doctors have much longer appointment times compared to traditional private practices. This allows the doctor time to thoroughly explore and discuss the patient’s medical issue and ensures adequate opportunities to discuss the patient’s concerns and questions – whilst also exploring newer, cutting edge treatments in the world.
  6. Coordination of Specialist Care: When you need specialist care, concierge doctors often facilitate expedited referrals to trusted specialists or private hospitals, and coordinate seamless transitions between primary and specialty care, through their connections built over years. This ensures continuity of care and minimises delays in accessing medical services by specialists, and at HealthClic for example, your concierge doctor will often visit with you to your specialist or hospital appointments, in order to provide much needed guidance, advice and support.

Studies on Concierge Medicine

“A two-year data analysis by Qliance Medical Management Inc. indicated that their subscription-based membership model actually saved patients 20% in health care costs due to reduced hospitalizations, specialist visits, and other sick care interventions.” – SOURCE

“Similarly, a published study by MDVIP concluded that their subscription-based membership model reduced patient hospitalizations by over 70%. Staying out of the hospital is priceless for us all.” – SOURCE

Considerations for Concierge Medicine

It is important to note that, while concierge medicine is considered the highest calibre of private healthcare you can access, there is a variety of concierge practices available – from $2,000 annual membership to $25,000. Patients who choose concierge doctors should understand the varying membership fees; which can vary depending on the level of services provided, the exclusivity of the patient list, and the experience of the concierge doctor you are registering with.

In Summary

Nevertheless, Concierge Medicine aims to elevate the patient experience and provides a clear choice for those seeking a more personalised healthcare journey with easy access to medical care, above the usual, traditional Harley Street-style GP practices in the U.K. which are now facing a large burden with 1000s of patients on their patient list.

As the demand for personalised medicine and the international community in the U.K. continues to grow, concierge doctors are likely to continue playing a crucial role in the U.K.’s healthcare system, contributing to improved patient satisfaction and outcomes. By bridging the gap between traditional healthcare and tailored medical services, concierge medicine is revolutionising the way UHNW clients experience and engage with healthcare.

Partner Focus – Talbot Capes Ltd

Talbot Capes Fine Art Management offers high-quality, discreet curatorship and care for art collections of all sizes and contents. The team handles everything from cataloguing, provenance research and inventory management, to shipping and installation, advising on climate control and conservation. Working to museum quality standards, they ensure the highest level of care to art collectors all over the world.

Prior to founding the company, director Sarah Capes had worked in both the public and private sectors of the art world for over ten years; exclusively with private collections for five years. She identified a clear market need for a business that could combine the curatorial skills necessary for public museums and galleries with those needed in private collections.

“The most exciting part of being an art collector is looking at art, making a purchase, and enjoying hanging that piece on the wall. But every work of art has a life of its own beyond that. Even a brand new contemporary artwork needs to be appropriately cared for in order to preserve it for future generations: it needs to be skilfully installed and well-lit, in safe environmental conditions. It needs to be properly logged, photographed and documented in a secure database, in order to save time and money on administrative procedures later down the line. All public museums and galleries have at least one curator – if not several – carrying out these tasks, and we believe that private collections should be able to secure with absolute confidence that same detailed level of care.”

By combining research, administration, curatorship and preventive conservation advice, Talbot Capes Fine Art Management provides peace of mind that not only are their clients’ artworks being appropriately preserved, but the value of the collection is fundamentally protected. Sarah and her expert team streamline what can be the daunting and time-consuming process of organising the documentation associated with every art collection – purchase records, sales invoices, photography, literature, import / export documents; this in turn can streamline a host of other processes, from organising insurance policies to legacy and estate planning.

The art market remains an opaque and unregulated one, where it can be difficult to know who to trust. As impartial and unbiased curators, Sarah and her team are able to offer honest opinions and act as a sounding board when clients are presented with acquisition proposals.

Having an overview of an entire collection allows the team to advise on acquisitions that will contribute thematically and sensibly to the collection as a whole, which can subsequently increase its value.

Many collectors lack the time to organise and manage their collections themselves. Talbot Capes Fine Art Management alleviates all of the many tasks involved, removing the burden from the collector and allowing them to carry on focussing on what it is they truly love: collecting.

“Sarah is a fantastic exponent of the art world. Her attention to detail and her approach to research and client support has been exemplary, and it has been truly inspiring to work with her and to benefit from her knowledge and expertise.” – Private Client, London

Eating the finest freshly prepared meals and sipping on your drink of choice while blissfully soaking up the sunshine, listening to the laughter in the air and relaxing in the height of luxury. It’s your holiday, your way.

To find out more about the finer details of luxury yacht chartering, we sat down with Katie House, Group PR, Marketing & Events for Sunseeker London Group, and Charter Broker for Sunseeker Charters, to discuss popular winter sun destinations, Sunseeker Charters fully tailored service and how to decide on what yacht is right for you…

Would you mind starting by telling us how the Charter arm of Sunseeker came about?

As proud carriers of the Sunseeker name, we are the dedicated go-to company for clients and brokers worldwide looking to find Sunseeker Yachts and other premium brand yachts to charter.

Sunseeker Charters was founded by the late Sunseeker Co-Founder, Robert Braithwaite some 15 years ago and like Robert, we see the great importance of offering our clients the option to charter as well as buy these stunning yachts.

With the support of the Sunseeker team of over 150 across 40 offices, spanning 20 countries, we market our fleet in over 12 different languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Egyptian, Greek, Turkish, Croatian, Bulgarian and Maltese so all clients are able to converse comfortably in their mother tongue.

With over 25 years of experience, our Group is able to seamlessly combine the ease of chartering direct with the ability to offer our Sunseeker Owners an opportunity to offset their costs by adding their vessels into our charter programme. Marketing our Charter vessels to our very own database of over 50,000 qualified Sunseeker clients and prospects, we provide the opportunity to secure charter bookings throughout the year.

What are your most popular winter sun destinations and which ones would you recommend?

Some stand out and popular destinations for chasing the sun in winter are Dubai, the British Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean. Warm weather, vibrant marine life, pristine beaches and azure waters make it a charterers paradise.

Sunseeker Charters offer a fully tailored service. Could you explain to us how this unique process works?

From the outset we work alongside you, gathering as much detail as we can about your perfect getaway. We then set about producing an itinerary for you and your guests, detailing day by day where you’ll be cruising and what you can hope to see along the way. We also take care of the finer details such as private jet charters, luxury car transfers, beach club bookings or restaurant reservations, as well as offering you expertise on the best anchorages and marinas to visit.

As soon as you step onboard any of our yachts, it’s the crew that deservedly take centre stage. Each member handpicked by us for being the very best at what they do. Our chefs, stewardesses and deck crew are there for your comfort, while our captains are your key in unlocking the door to your chosen cruising grounds.

With such a vast selection of yachts on offer, how does the team ensure that a client is matched perfectly?

Choosing the right type of yacht for your family charter depends on various factors, including your preferences, the size of your family, your budget, and the activities you plan to do during your charter.

There are many considerations to help you decide the perfect boat for you:

  1. Group Size: Consider the number of people in your family. Smaller families may find a smaller yacht suitable, while larger families may require a larger motor yacht with multiple cabins.
  2. Budget: Yacht charters can vary significantly in price. Establish a budget for your charter, including not just the cost of the yacht but also additional expenses like fuel, crew gratuities, and provisions. Keep in mind that larger yachts typically come with higher costs.
  3. Destination: Think about where you plan to charter. Some areas may have specific types of yachts that are more common or better suited to local conditions.
  4. Activities: Consider the activities you want to enjoy during your charter. If you’re interested in water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving, or paddleboarding, you’ll want a yacht with the necessary equipment and storage space. If you prefer a more relaxed cruise, a yacht with a spacious deck and comfortable seating will be ideal.
  5. Amenities: Different yachts come with varying amenities. Some may have luxury features like a hot tub, a barbecue grill, or a fully equipped kitchen, while others may be more basic. Decide what amenities are important to your family’s comfort and enjoyment.
  6. Duration: Consider the length of your charter. If it’s just for a day or a weekend, you might opt for a smaller yacht. For longer trips, especially if you plan to stay on board for an extended period, you’ll need a yacht with more space and amenities.

Ultimately, your family’s preferences and comfort should guide your choice. Consider the style, size, and layout that will best suit your family’s needs and desires.

At Sunseeker we can help you navigate your options and find the right yacht for you, while also providing valuable insights into the chartering process and destinations available.

What’s included in a Sunseeker Charter? What luxuries and special touches can people expect?

Included in the charter fee is the use of vessel, the expert crew, water toys (these vary depending on the size of vessel chartered) you will also pay VAT based on the area you are chartering from and APA (advanced provisioning allowance) this is typically 35% of the charter fee and this covers fuel, food, drinks, mooring fee’s and any other expenses you may have while on charter. APA is managed by your captain.

And finally, why would you recommend a Sunseeker Charter holiday over a more traditional hotel break?

Chartering a yacht offers numerous benefits, making it an attractive option for those seeking a unique and luxurious vacation experience. It allows you to enjoy all the benefits of owning a superyacht, without the running costs.

When chartering a yacht, you have exclusive use of the vessel, ensuring privacy and a personalised experience. This means that we can create a tailored itinerary based on your preferences. You can choose your destinations, anchor in secluded coves, and enjoy the luxury of the high-end amenities on board.

As yacht charter is such a high-end personalised service, the professional crew are there to cater to your every need throughout your time at sea. We have the flexibility to adapt your plans based on weather conditions and your preferences throughout the trip.

Many yacht charters offer gourmet dining experiences prepared by talented onboard chefs. You can enjoy one-of-a-kind menus and dine in picturesque settings, which may be sat on the deck with ocean views. There is an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate breathtaking landscapes while waking up to a different view every morning and enjoy the beauty of the sea and nature.

Yachts often carry a variety of water toys and equipment, such as paddleboards, snorkelling gear, jet skis, and even scuba diving equipment, meaning you can engage in water sports and activities at your leisure.

Yacht charters are an excellent option for spending quality time with family and friends. You can bond over shared experiences, enjoy leisurely meals together, and create lasting memories over special occasions, giving you the intimacy, you may not find elsewhere.

Spotlight Interview – Phoebe Maddrell, Lifestyle Manager

From everyday management and business administration to those complex projects that require a helping hand, Lifestyle Manager and BBB Member Phoebe Maddrell is well-versed in delivering unparalleled results to UHNW clients.

We recently sat down with Phoebe to discuss work life balance, neurodivergent minds and how she is poised and ready to help clients lighten their load…

Let’s start a little before the beginning if you don’t mind. How did you come to realise that the meticulous planning and organisation of other people’s lives would be something that you would excel in?

I fell into the organisation side – I had worked in corporate businesses for over 8 years before deciding to work onboard yachts in my late twenties. From yachts, I evolved into the role of a Lifestyle Manager which meant I oversaw the clients personal lives, business affairs and multiple properties. With my first land-based position I was lucky enough to work for two talented architects, so there were elements of project management and interior design involved too. I loved the problem solving and strategy required to deal with lots of assets and personalities.

Could you describe your job role to us and the services that you offer to your clients?

I help UHNW clients and their teams accomplish streamlined communication, asset management and an improved work/life balance. So that staff have reduced burn out and the client experiences curated luxury. Without the chaos of lost information, misunderstood requests and frequent staff turnovers. There are also long standing clients who I have previously worked with who ask me to manage individual projects, like a house move or launching an art inventory.

What is it about your role that you enjoy so much?

I’ve always loved the diversity of conundrums to solve and people to work with. I love being engaged to work with an estate or business team and seeing the transformation from disorder to calm, which improves the lives of the clients and employees. I meet a lot of people who feel like an island working in this industry but there’s actually a lot of repeated patterns and problems which can be solved by external oversight. I feel very lucky that I am able to get insight into the inner workings of so many clients’ lives.

Why do you believe that a client should opt for your services over that of a competitor?

I haven’t found any competitors offering what I do, specifically. I feel it’s more common that they do ‘off the shelf’ solutions on how to instate systems which are software based. My offer is more diverse and bespoke. I work with employees or vendors directly via mentorship. I often work with clients directly for full lifestyle audits and implementation – this usually means ensuring all assets and associated admin is accounted for, estates are run efficiently and lifestyles run smoothly. I support all parts of the process and evaluate how we can make things better. The only thing I need is a client who is ready to embrace change.

How do you distinguish a healthy work life balance and what tips do you have for people perhaps struggling to achieve that?

I truly think it is the biggest issue facing our industry as a whole and many talented people are leaving because they are struggling to achieve a balance and feeling very burnt out after the pandemic.

The most important thing is to instate boundaries, especially around your time and availability. A simple tip I regularly recommend is to take a step back and ask, “Is this a me problem, or a them problem?”. This industry has a knack of making us feel that when something goes wrong or becomes difficult it’s a “you” problem, when it may not be. Learning to understand that difference can be vital in maintaining balance and experiencing less stress.

You’re also a proud supporter of neurodivergent minds. Would you mind telling us a little bit more about why this cause is so close to your heart?

Broadly speaking, I think neurodiversity is in its infancy in terms of how we understand what that terminology means. At its heart I think that we are moving towards a more inclusive world, where we recognise that not everyone thinks the same and not everyone learns the same. This really ties into the heart of my business and ethos: when we build systems and hierarchy we need to play to people’s strengths and understand that it is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. That’s how you get the best out of everyone and make the magic happen.

And finally, what goals are you still looking to achieve in your career?

I am really passionate about growing my own empire in this industry by creating a positive change for staff and a meaningful difference within this sector. I want to empower women to negotiate higher salaries and feel valued. To help staff avoid burnout and recognise when jobs are damaging their mental health. And finally, to make my mark on even more estates to create a legacy of knowledge to help them run smoothly for years to come, regardless of what unforeseen circumstances may occur!

Business Spotlight – Finito: The Employability Experts

There’s nothing more fascinating than an entrepreneurial tale. Discovering the trials and tribulations, surprises and pitfalls that come with building a business from the ground up.

We recently sat down with Founder and Chief Executive of Finito, Ronel Lehmann, to find out more about his personal journey building his incredibly successful business supporting young people in their transition from education to employment.

From the early days of harnessing a passion for service, to an inspirational editorial pivot that produced interviews with some of the UK’s most prominent figures, Ronel shares with us first-hand the risks, challenges and lessons learnt along the way…

1. When did you first have the idea for your business? Is it something you always wanted to do?

It’s funny when you look back and see how certain things were always pointing the way. Throughout my marketing and public relations career, clients would often ask if I could help their sons and daughters. After I moved on, and had time to look back on my achievements, the feeling of having helped people transition from education to a meaningful career remained with me. This has always been my passion. The gratitude from those you have helped beats anything.

2. What motivates you?

I find constant inspiration in those who give back. Some of those who have particularly inspired me have now passed away and so we have a slot in Finito World – the magazine I founded in lockdown – called Indelible Mark where we honour such people. One piece was about Jeff Katz, the legendary investigator, and my great friend. He inspired me with his can-do optimism, and that’s something I seek to emulate in my own work. I also adored the late Lord Young of Graffham, who was so open to requests. Never say no: you’ll find it’s actually easier to help than not.

Culturally, I won’t say that Coldplay is my guilty pleasure as I feel I have nothing whatsoever to be guilty about – but some might view it that way! I saw the band in Wembley last year and was on a high for a week: something to do with the gumption, attack and joy of their music speaks to me.

3. What did your career history look like before you set up your business?

I had a broad range of roles, including serving as a recruitment consultant, stockbroker, and public relations adviser with the IPS Group, Citicorp Scrimgeour Vickers, McAvoy Wreford Bayley and Citigate Dewe Rogerson, before setting up my eponymously named marketing agency, which I ran for 26 years. During this time, I became particularly well known for my crisis work for clients, and in 2014, was invited as a Witness to the Treasury Select Committee to give evidence on SME bank lending, a cause which I had championed vociferously.

4. What were the initial risks and what do those risks look like now?

I suppose the sheer newness of it: there are no direct competitors to Finito, so we have been trailblazers in the sector. Sometimes people, for understandable reasons, might compare us to a recruitment agency in that our business opens up onto the world of jobs and careers. But that’s really where the similarity ends: we focus entirely on the individual and seek to shape and mould them, help them find their way. In recruitment companies, a fee is taken from employers hiring a candidate. The element of excitement about this is still there. We’re much better known than we were ten years ago, but there’s always more to do. Watch this space, I say.

5. What has surprised you in the process of growing your business?

Well, I certainly didn’t expect to found a publishing arm of the business which is precisely what I did during lockdown by launching Finito World. That in turn has helped us mentor our candidates who can use our journalism platform to help connect themselves, or simply to tell their stories. More broadly, there’s been an astonishing amount of goodwill toward the business. No one has a bad word to say.

6. What makes a good business leader?

I like the question and want to quote back at you John Mortimer’s dictum: “No brilliance is required for the law. Only common sense and relatively clean fingernails”. You can change the word ‘law’ for ‘business’ and I think it still makes sense. It’s certainly easy to overthink in business: but looking the part is important, as is seeing the wood for the trees, which in itself requires a dose of common sense. I’m also a great believer in doing the right things and taking advantage of opportunities: I’m reactive in that sense. I like the way the world is always coming at you – as business leaders, we need to be flexible, otherwise the job loses its crucial sense of adventure.

7. What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

Firing unsuitable people. You worry disproportionately about the decision and yet when you execute it, you wonder why you agonised so much about it. It’s possible to be too nice in business sometimes. Business leaders should know that if you’re discussing someone too much then they probably should already have left the business. On the other hand, that individual may secretly be unhappy and relish confronting the reality of the situation: we all know, deep down, whether we’re performing and everybody hates struggling with their work. It’s usually better to bite the bullet: among many other things, it saves time.

8. What are you most proud of professionally?

Launching Finito World. I suppose if I look back this was an act of inspiration almost indistinguishable from madness: all the newspapers were shrinking, and yet I saw that there was an appetite for something new. Fast forward three years, and we’ve interviewed everyone from Sir David Attenborough to Sir Tom Stoppard, Sir Martin Sorrell, Sir Richard Branson and many, many more. We were also finalists in the 2022 PPA Awards.

9. What has been your largest or most impactful investment as a company?

Right from the beginning, using the expertise of our advisory board member Dame Mary Richardson, we decided we would need a bursary for students who cannot afford our fees. It’s been hugely successful and lifted many out of disadvantage and difficulty. We recently took on our first Ukrainian refugee and we are committed to doing more.

10. What advice would you give to new business owners?

You have to have self-belief – but then perhaps people who have set up their own business already have that or they wouldn’t have taken the plunge. I do think it’s important to take the right decisions on outside investment. You either need to maintain control or have investors who really understand you, believe in you, and who you can bounce ideas off.

Weightlifting and How It Changed My Life

By Mirella, Personal Trainer – Mirella Fitness

Many women opt for hours of cardio in their fitness routines and neglect the power of weightlifting. I was always a cardio bunny, spending hours pounding the streets around my hometown. I loved it…it gave me an escape. But I never achieved the type of body I wanted. I also enjoyed workouts with weights, classes at the gym, home workouts via VHS, but it wasn’t anything serious. By serious, I mean, lifting real weight!

Like many women, I was all about the ‘burn’, and that was only felt through smashing myself with lots of endurance! Hours pounding the streets or the treadmill. It wasn’t until I got serious about the weights that I realised how addictive building strength could be. And how easy it can be to change my body and maintain the results.

There are many misconceptions about women and weightlifting, particularly when it comes to women’s physical appearance. Not only can lifting weights help women achieve their fitness goals, but the health benefits (both mental and physical) are huge. Here are just a few…

  1. Increased muscle mass – not only does it make you look leaner, but it raises your BMR (calories your body burns at rest). This means you’ll need to eat more to maintain your muscles, win win!
  2. Increases strength – from the age of 30, women begin to atrophy (lose muscle) so it really is important to strength train so you can continue to carry shopping, sit on the toilet, climb stairs or even mountains as you go into old age!
  3. It’s fun – weight lifting itself is a fun and effective form of exercise. Using your newfound strength to do things you couldn’t previously do, like a chin up!
  4. Confidence – knowing your own strength (and knowing how easy it is to get stronger) is a huge confidence booster, not to mention going into the gym and feeling like you are a warrior woman! Forget the cardio for achieving a toned body… weights are where it’s at!
  5. You can shape and sculpt your body – weight training gives you the ability to focus on certain muscle groups and attain the physique you desire. Some of my favourite exercises for women focus on achieving perky glutes!
  6. Bone health – women’s bones are at risk of osteoporosis as we age. Lifting weights increases bone density, particularly around menopause, and helps keep bones healthy.

As well as the many benefits above, weightlifting also helped me to build a better relationship with food. I now love food, without having a guilty relationship with it. I no longer restrict myself or use it as punishment. Instead, it nurtures my body and fuels my workouts.

As a Personal Trainer, I have really enjoyed helping so many women learn to lift safely and effectively, and ultimately find a love for lifting weights too!

So, if you’re tired of working out endlessly, living a miserable life by restricting foods and calories, and still not seeing the results you want, then perhaps it’s time to look at how weights could make you feel amazing!
