Islas Secas, Panama: Phoebe’s dream destination for 2024 is Islas Secas, a secluded resort surrounded by 14 volcanic islands. This is an unparalleled and undiscovered nature experience with 750 species of fish, 80 species of birds and 128 plant species as well as whale sharks, giant manta, humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins. You have free rein to adventure at this incredible destination. If she could wave a magic wand, Phoebe would transport herself to this idyllic retreat.

Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana: Katy dreams of becoming a cowgirl in the breathtaking landscapes of Montana. Ideal for spring and summer, Ranch at Rock Creek immerses you in nature and adventure on horseback, bikes, skis, snowmobiles as well as tons of other activities. This destination is about getting away from it all, putting the screens away and reconnecting with nature. “Pretending I’m 18 again” has never sounded so appealing.

Amandira in Raja Ampat: Set sail on Aman’s luxury yacht, Amandira, complete with the luxury of your own Dive Master for scuba diving. Great for teenagers, you can become PADI certified during your trip. Imagine exploring the vibrant marine life of Raja Ampat, diving into crystal-clear waters, and relaxing on a yacht designed for ultimate comfort and elegance. It’s at the top of Katy’s wish list for excitement and adventure.

Cultural & Luxurious Escapes

South Korea – Seoul and Jeju Island: Celine is drawn to the vibrant K-Pop culture and serene beauty of South Korea. With its blend of dynamic city life in Seoul and the tranquil landscapes of Jeju Island, this fascinating destination remains undiscovered by European travellers. It’s the perfect place for those inspired by South Korean cinema or wanting something completely different and our experts on the ground are the best!

Thailand: Phoebe wishes to explore Thailand and is excited to stay at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. Known for its diverse landscapes and rich culture, an adventure here can take you from the Mekong River and elephant country of Chiang Mai to the turquoise waters of the James Bond islands in the South. And the food! Celine had the best rice of her life there for $5 USD (contact us and we’ll share our secrets).

Il Reschio, Umbria: Experience the historical charm of Il Reschio, a unique hotel set in a restored fortress in the heart of Umbria. It’s been awarded multiple Conde Nast Travel awards for a reason. Celine recommends this destination for its awe-inspiring countryside, olive groves, vineyards, and incredible cuisine. It’s a place where history and luxury converge to create an unforgettable experience and with its villa and activities, it’s perfect for a family getaway.

Exclusive & Unique Adventures

Antarctica: Want to see Polar Bears? Head off to the untouched beauty of the polar regions with our pick of the best expedition companies, ensuring you travel on the most luxurious and high tech ships. Celine is desperate to see the untouched seas of Greenland and smell whales. There are so many of these majestic creatures that the boats have to carefully navigate the waters around them. This is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, St. Moritz: Phoebe craves the mountains in summer and Barrett’s is long on her wish list. It may have something to do with the lake in the hotel’s back garden and the backdrop of stunning mountains. Hike in the morning, paddle board on the lake in the afternoon and spa before cocktails and dinner.

Hike through the Himalayas and retreat at Ananda Wellness: Healing for the mind body and soul. No phones, no GPS, no music, aside from chanting monks – just you and our expert guide in the middle of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. Katy’s dream destination for 2025. We go where others don’t, staying away from the tourist trail. The majestic Himalayas offer both physical challenges and spiritual renewal, making it a journey of a lifetime. Complete your adventure with a stay at Ananda Wellness in the Himalayan foothills of North India.

Joro Experiences Q&A

What could be more exciting than exploring far flung corners of the globe. An exhilarating adventure that incorporates local cultures and unique experiences unknown to the everyday traveller. An off the beaten track exploration that opens your eyes to what this magical world has to offer. To find out how to make this dream a reality, we sat down with Henry Comyn, Co-Founder and MD of Joro Experiences to talk experiential travel, sustainable efforts, top travel tips and dream destinations…

For someone new to Joro, could you explain what you do and how it all began?

We are a dedicated team of travel specialists committed to crafting and delivering extraordinary adventures across the globe on both land and sea. Combining our specialist knowledge, trusted connections, and years of expertise, we aim to transport our clients from their everyday lives into unforgettable moments.

Our journey began with a clear vision: to provide deeper, more enriching travel experiences. Whether it’s a challenging solo expedition, a fortnight-long celebration, or a multi-year sabbatical, we strive to take our clients on journeys that go beyond the ordinary. In a world that feels increasingly familiar, we focus on uncovering the unexpected to make travel extraordinary once more. We continue to push the boundaries of what travel can be, ensuring each adventure is as unique and memorable as the individuals we serve.

From concept to completion, how does the process work?

At Joro, understanding our client’s desires, dreams, and needs is fundamental to our process. It all begins with an initial call, during which we delve into the client’s preferences and aspirations for their trip. Based on this conversation, our travel team proposes one (or several) destinations tailored to the client’s requests. We then invite feedback on this initial proposal, refining and tweaking it until the client gives approval.

Throughout this process, we collaborate with trusted suppliers to craft a completely bespoke proposal. If there are opportunities for clients to support local communities or engage in scientific research, we highlight these options.

Once the final itinerary and costs are agreed upon, we present everything for sign-off. However, our work doesn’t stop there. We continue to fine-tune the itinerary, ensuring it remains uniquely tailored to the client’s needs.

Our travel designers are available 24/7 to support the client when the trip is underway. In some cases, a member of the Joro team may even accompany the client, providing hosting and on-the-ground assistance.

After trip completion, we hold a feedback call with the client to gather insights and suggestions for future improvements, as well as discussing travel plans for the future. Our design team may also create photo albums of the trip to send to clients acting as a memento of their journey, and videos may also be crafted from footage captured during the trip.

Do you think factors like purpose, discovery and adventure have become more important to clients in recent years (post covid)? Are people looking for more of an experience when they travel rather than just an all-inclusive break?

Since covid, we have noticed that our clients are seeking experiential journeys that offer learning, immersion and growth opportunities; which may be achieved through intrepid adventure and discovery. Our clients have also become increasingly more interested in capturing their experiences using professional photographers and videographers.

Group travel has become more popular since covid, with the purpose of creating meaningful connections; be it with local guides, extended family and/or specialist hosts.

You pride yourselves on being a sustainable travel company and a force for good. How does that manifest itself in what you do and the services you provide?

At Joro, through our actions and services, we strive to be a force for good, ensuring that each journey not only enriches our clients but also contributes positively to the world we explore. As a proud B Corporation (since 2021), Joro operates with a steadfast commitment to both people and the planet. We ensure our travel practices positively impact the environments and communities we are privileged to work with, all while maintaining an exclusive, all-encompassing experience for our clients.

Travel is a fundamental human desire, but with that comes the responsibility to understand and protect our world. This understanding led to the founding of The Conscious Travel Foundation, a testament to our dedication to sustainable travel practices and ongoing efforts to make a positive difference.

For someone looking to dip their toe into experiential travel what would you recommend?

Our travel designers have come up with many ideas; here are just a few of them:

East Africa: Experience a blend of safari adventures and meaningful community involvement.

Norway: Enjoy a mix of adventure activities, dramatic fjords and cultural experiences on a Norway charter.

Sri Lanka: A perfect introduction to cultural experiences with its rich history, vibrant local life and diverse landscapes.

Central America: Ideal for USA-based clients seeking a ‘soft entry’ into experiential travel – offering diving, wildlife encounters and a fusion of gastronomic and cultural experiences.

Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu: Perfect for the more adventurous traveller, where you can truly immerse yourself in wilderness and enjoy unparalleled natural beauty and cultural authenticity.

These destinations provide a varied and enriching introduction to experiential travel, allowing you to explore and connect with the world in meaningful ways.

And finally, what’s next for Joro? Any exciting plans in the pipeline that you can share with the BBB community?

We’ve got a really exciting summer coming up – with trips happening across the globe, from intimate family gatherings to large celebrations. We’re also working on a new website and branding, which we hope to launch towards the end of the year. Most excitingly, it’s been great working with several BBB members, and we look forward to our continued collaboration, creating wonderful moments for our clients.

Partner Spotlight – Sunseeker Charters

As dream vacations go, it’s safe to say there’s nothing quite like chartering your own yacht. Allow us to set the scene…you’re surrounded by friends and loved ones, exploring new coastlines and visiting new places, from the intimacy and exclusivity of your own private surroundings. Eating the finest freshly prepared meals and sipping on your drink of choice while blissfully soaking up the sunshine, listening to the laughter in the air and relaxing in the height of luxury. It’s your holiday, your way.

To find out more about the finer details of luxury yacht chartering, we sat down with Katie House, Group PR, Marketing & Events for Sunseeker London Group, and Charter Broker for Sunseeker Charters, to discuss popular winter sun destinations, Sunseeker Charters fully tailored service and how to decide on what yacht is right for you…

Would you mind starting by telling us how the Charter arm of Sunseeker came about?

As proud carriers of the Sunseeker name, we are the dedicated go-to company for clients and brokers worldwide looking to find Sunseeker Yachts and other premium brand yachts to charter.

Sunseeker Charters was founded by the late Sunseeker Co-Founder, Robert Braithwaite some 15 years ago and like Robert, we see the great importance of offering our clients the option to charter as well as buy these stunning yachts.

With the support of the Sunseeker team of over 150 across 40 offices, spanning 20 countries, we market our fleet in over 12 different languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Egyptian, Greek, Turkish, Croatian, Bulgarian and Maltese so all clients are able to converse comfortably in their mother tongue.

With over 25 years of experience, our Group is able to seamlessly combine the ease of chartering direct with the ability to offer our Sunseeker Owners an opportunity to offset their costs by adding their vessels into our charter programme. Marketing our Charter vessels to our very own database of over 50,000 qualified Sunseeker clients and prospects, we provide the opportunity to secure charter bookings throughout the year.

What are your most popular winter sun destinations and which ones would you recommend?

Some stand out and popular destinations for chasing the sun in winter are Dubai, the British Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean. Warm weather, vibrant marine life, pristine beaches and azure waters make it a charterers paradise.

Sunseeker Charters offer a fully tailored service. Could you explain to us how this unique process works?

From the outset we work alongside you, gathering as much detail as we can about your perfect getaway. We then set about producing an itinerary for you and your guests, detailing day by day where you’ll be cruising and what you can hope to see along the way. We also take care of the finer details such as private jet charters, luxury car transfers, beach club bookings or restaurant reservations, as well as offering you expertise on the best anchorages and marinas to visit.

As soon as you step onboard any of our yachts, it’s the crew that deservedly take centre stage. Each member handpicked by us for being the very best at what they do. Our chefs, stewardesses and deck crew are there for your comfort, while our captains are your key in unlocking the door to your chosen cruising grounds.

With such a vast selection of yachts on offer, how does the team ensure that a client is matched perfectly?

Choosing the right type of yacht for your family charter depends on various factors, including your preferences, the size of your family, your budget, and the activities you plan to do during your charter.

There are many considerations to help you decide the perfect boat for you:

  1. Group Size: Consider the number of people in your family. Smaller families may find a smaller yacht suitable, while larger families may require a larger motor yacht with multiple cabins.
  2. Budget: Yacht charters can vary significantly in price. Establish a budget for your charter, including not just the cost of the yacht but also additional expenses like fuel, crew gratuities, and provisions. Keep in mind that larger yachts typically come with higher costs.
  3. Destination: Think about where you plan to charter. Some areas may have specific types of yachts that are more common or better suited to local conditions.
  4. Activities: Consider the activities you want to enjoy during your charter. If you’re interested in water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving, or paddleboarding, you’ll want a yacht with the necessary equipment and storage space. If you prefer a more relaxed cruise, a yacht with a spacious deck and comfortable seating will be ideal.
  5. Amenities: Different yachts come with varying amenities. Some may have luxury features like a hot tub, a barbecue grill, or a fully equipped kitchen, while others may be more basic. Decide what amenities are important to your family’s comfort and enjoyment.
  6. Duration: Consider the length of your charter. If it’s just for a day or a weekend, you might opt for a smaller yacht. For longer trips, especially if you plan to stay on board for an extended period, you’ll need a yacht with more space and amenities.

Ultimately, your family’s preferences and comfort should guide your choice. Consider the style, size, and layout that will best suit your family’s needs and desires.

At Sunseeker we can help you navigate your options and find the right yacht for you, while also providing valuable insights into the chartering process and destinations available.

What’s included in a Sunseeker Charter? What luxuries and special touches can people expect?

Included in the charter fee is the use of vessel, the expert crew, water toys (these vary depending on the size of vessel chartered) you will also pay VAT based on the area you are chartering from and APA (advanced provisioning allowance) this is typically 35% of the charter fee and this covers fuel, food, drinks, mooring fee’s and any other expenses you may have while on charter. APA is managed by your captain.

And finally, why would you recommend a Sunseeker Charter holiday over a more traditional hotel break?

Chartering a yacht offers numerous benefits, making it an attractive option for those seeking a unique and luxurious vacation experience. It allows you to enjoy all the benefits of owning a superyacht, without the running costs.

When chartering a yacht, you have exclusive use of the vessel, ensuring privacy and a personalised experience. This means that we can create a tailored itinerary based on your preferences. You can choose your destinations, anchor in secluded coves, and enjoy the luxury of the high-end amenities on board.

As yacht charter is such a high-end personalised service, the professional crew are there to cater to your every need throughout your time at sea. We have the flexibility to adapt your plans based on weather conditions and your preferences throughout the trip.

Many yacht charters offer gourmet dining experiences prepared by talented onboard chefs. You can enjoy one-of-a-kind menus and dine in picturesque settings, which may be sat on the deck with ocean views. There is an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate breathtaking landscapes while waking up to a different view every morning and enjoy the beauty of the sea and nature.

Yachts often carry a variety of water toys and equipment, such as paddleboards, snorkelling gear, jet skis, and even scuba diving equipment, meaning you can engage in water sports and activities at your leisure.

Yacht charters are an excellent option for spending quality time with family and friends. You can bond over shared experiences, enjoy leisurely meals together, and create lasting memories over special occasions, giving you the intimacy, you may not find elsewhere.

Stockholm’s younger sibling is, dare we say it, even more hip than its big brother. Brimming with the beautifully designed restaurants, bars and homeware shops that Sweden does so well, this small but perfectly formed city is ideal for a weekend break. Head to underground bar Stranger for a speakeasy vibe and an inventive drinks list or Koka for a fine dining feast. All the best spots are within walking distance and there is a laid-back but vibrant atmosphere. We’d advise taking an empty suitcase ready for all those Scandi style finds that you will want to bring home.

Needless to say, you’ll eat some of the best pizza and there is a buzz in the air throughout the seasons. Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi is the trendy pizza option and great for people spotting. Designing the Perfect Ski Chalet With Nicky Dobree

By Anya Cooklin-Lofting

From exposed concrete to velvet-upholstered dining chairs, sleek fireplaces to rich, wooden panelling, Nicky Dobree’s portfolio of luxury ski chalets serves to prove that your home on the slopes can be as tailored to your tastes as your city pied a terre or your country pile. While Dobree has covetable experience working on a range of different projects, from villas to contemporary hotels, it is chalet life that has inspired her most.

This month, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dobree while she was on location in the Alps, orchestrating the seamless delivery of yet another luxurious ski chalet. We chatted all things chalet design, from the functional to the beautiful, so read on to discover Dobree’s tips and tricks to help make your piste-side property perfect.

What drew you to ski chalet design initially?

The joy of the mountains really changes your routine. You become so immersed in nature that it changes your day. It feels balanced and mindful, from the physical activity to the fresh air and the uninterrupted time spent with friends and family. It’s unsurprising that now, as people have negotiated more flexibility from their employers or are encouraging remote working as an employer themselves, they have begun spending more time in their ski properties, finding that the allure of the mountains beats the relentless thrum of city life. People have different priorities now, and there is a simplicity in living this way. Yes, ski chalets can be all-singing and all-dancing, but the implicit immersion in nature brings an unbeatable quietness and the luxury of discretion.

What are some of the aesthetic principles you work on when designing ski chalets?

A more nuanced principle that I like to work on is that each chalet I design must have a sense of place. This often comes down to the materials we might use, including timber and stone. I like to let the local environment dictate the finishes we choose.

Next, it’s time to add a sense of elegant composure, a timelessness that makes a chalet feel like home. This involves the introduction of layering up, from soft furnishings to art and lighting. I love the balance of the rough, earthy timers and stones with these elements, like patterned wallpapers and upholstery.

On a broader note, I feel it’s important to invest in beautiful, high-quality, ethically made pieces in any property. It’s about building once, building well, and buying once, buying well. Working to this mantra, over my 20-year career, I have never had to replace anything in my clients’ homes.

How should you incorporate functionality into such a sleek and considered space?

Functionality is key, and environmental functionality is specifically important. Of course, you’re dealing with lots of snow around the peak season, so spacious boot rooms are crucial. When it comes to storage, it’s true that skiing is very much tied to the bulky, heavy equipment needed even at a basic level, so we often specify sleek, fitted cabinets for all the skiing paraphernalia. However, it would be the same for a house on the Mediterranean for a client who loves watersports, so ski chalets aren’t alone in these considerations.

I have always noticed the prominence of beautiful sitting rooms or lounge areas in your work – why are these spaces important?

The thing I love most about the living rooms I get to design in ski chalets is that they are often devoid of TVs. This kind of technology, from plasmas to game consoles, is relegated to darker, quieter spaces of ski chalets, from home cinemas to more modest entertainment rooms. Chalets are all about encouraging being together and lively conversation. I usually centre the living rooms I design on cosy-yet-imposing fireplaces, creating a warm environment in every sense of the term. This layout encourages loved ones to gather, treating these spaces as social hubs and hearts of the home.

Any frequent client requests over the years? Home bars, cosy seating for informal dining, sound systems, lifts to the ground floors etc

A good sound system, party rooms, home bars, cosy fireplaces and lifts are some of the most frequent requests I get when designing ski chalets. There is an enormous wellness element these days, too. A spa is no longer just a hot tub or a sauna, but a hammam or a massage suite.

We have also worked with clients on creating opportunities for different dining experiences within their chalets, including more casual set-ups for breakfast or quick lunches to exquisite rooms offering a semblance of private fine dining spaces in the world’s most luxurious restaurants and hotels.

Dog showers are also becoming more popular. We install them in the ski rooms to ensure furry friends get a proper wash before they reenter the house after a day on the slopes or walking in the mountains.

Sailing Collective Is Breaking the Yacht Mould

By Amira Hashish

Dreaming of a Caribbean sail where the cuisine is a match for the scenery or fancy gliding through the picture perfect islands of French Polynesia in style? The Sailing Collective specialises in global yacht adventures which hone in on bespoke experiences and off the beaten track adventures for individuals or groups. Founder Dayyan Armstrong tells us why his goal is to give guests a true trip of a lifetime…

What inspired the launch of the Sailing Collective?

The launch of the Sailing Collective in 2012 was inspired by our passion for sharing the wonderful aspects of sailing charters to an audience of wide-eyed travelers interested in experiencing nature and culture through this unique vantage point. When we started, we noticed that the other organisations either focused on partying or ‘do it yourself’ budget sailing trips. So we took our passion for adventure sailing and married it with our philosophy of hospitality. Our approach was unique in that we considered ourselves a travel company first and foremost and we use sailing charters as our platform to showcase world adventure to our audience. We then integrated an advanced culinary program focusing on regional provisioning and sourcing all our ingredients used aboard from the islands and coastal farmers along the way.

How does the concept work?

Sailing Collective Travel Co. is unique in the yacht charter industry. Along with being yacht brokers, we only use hand-selected captains and chefs who work directly with Sailing Collective to ensure each departure is unique and bespoke. With access to over 4000 yachts worldwide, we cherry pick the quality charter sailboats for our clients to ensure comfort and quality amenities aboard. An interested client will reach out to us directly about a private or group sailing charter.

Do you do individual and group voyages?

Yes, we provide both group journeys where guests can book a solo or double occupancy cabin aboard one of our scheduled departures. Our group journey schedule is posted on our website and interested travelers can book directly online. We also organise bespoke custom private charters for groups of friends of families. A client will contact us with an interest of a sailing holiday in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, for example, and we work with them to match them with the right vessel at a price point that works with their budget. We then match them with a captain and chef team and we work with them to design the perfect itinerary.

Which kind of destinations do you cover and where do the sails start?

Since our start in 2012, we set out to bring as many travelers throughout the world as possible. Because of this, we now have more than 25 unique itineraries that we have created. The Sailing Collective operates our yacht charters all year long and choose itineraries based on the season. For example, during the summer we mainly focus on the Mediterranean with itineraries throughout Croatia, Aeolian Islands, Sardinia, Corsica, Turkey, Mallorca (the list goes on) and when the season ends, we pick up where we can voyage like French Polynesia, Thailand, and the entirety of the Caribbean. One of our mottos is ‘if there’s water, a coastline, and sailboats available, we’ll plan an itinerary there’. An itinerary typically starts and ends in the same locations. For example, in French Polynesia we depart from the island of Raiatea. We then circumnavigate the Leeward Islands exploring the islands or Huahine, Taha’a, Bora Bora, and then end back at the same marina on the island of Raiatea.

What do your itineraries include?

A typical day looks like this: we wake up anchored in a calm and secluded cove. Our chef prepares an outstanding breakfast and guests have coffee, tea, and their morning swim. We then lift anchor and sail for a couple hours where we will find another unique cove where we will anchor and explore. The captain might lead a snorkel or a beach adventure while the chef prepares yet another outstanding meal. If any other yacht is nearby, there is a look of envy when our chefs prepare their cuisine. After lunch, we might sail for a short while to our end destination. We may decide to spend the night at a marina where we’ll explore ashore and go to a unique restaurant that Sailing Collective has discovered during our voyages. The itinerary is curated, but we also allow for adventure. If a once in a lifetime experience presents itself to us, we will be the first to pivot and change tacks. This has lead to many life-long beautiful memories.

How long do your voyages tend to last?

Our voyages are typically one week long and often run from Saturday to Saturday. There is some room to customise the schedule by request.

In addition to the captain, what other team members are included?

Each departure has one captain and one chef aboard. Larger catamaran charters might have a first mate but typically our charters are lead by a captain and chef team.

Do you offer bespoke experiences?

Each Sailing Collective experience is bespoke. We have a saying for captains at the Sailing Collective, ‘we don’t follow our own itineraries’.  This allows us to listen to our guests and curate an experience for them on the spot. Our captains share experiences with each other and if one of the team members has an incredible experience at a restaurant or a hike for example, we’ll adapt. Our goal is always for guests to have the most unique week of their lives.

Where better to expand your view of the galaxy than in an over-water observatory? Stargazing at Anantara Kihavah is a truly magical experience. He went on to become the protégé of Italian astronomer Dr. Massimo Tarenghi and has spent more than a decade working as a professional astronomer. He shares his passion and expertise of the constellations in weekly stargazing sessions. The proximity to the equator and its non-polluted skies means both hemispheres’ stars are clearly visible. Spot the pale yellow rings of Saturn or the counter-rotating zones and belts of Jupiter. Save the Turtles

From its Fab Lab, where kids can turn marine plastic into 3D-printed models, to free children’s diving lessons, Patina Maldives has rapidly become a standard-bearer for marine conservation in the area. It is also the first resort in the Maldives with a 100 percent solar-powered kids’ club, recreation and dive centres.

A sea turtle biologist is stationed on-island, acting as a guest educator and overseeing rescue efforts for any sea turtles that become entangled in so-called ghost gear. The resort is also facilitating a pioneering genetic research expedition to study the local Maldivian hawksbill sea turtle population. Conducted by registered turtle conservation charity the Olive Ridley Project, the pilot expedition will depart from Patina Maldives later this year on a mission to gather tissue samples that will unravel the genetic makeup of Maldivian hawksbill sea turtles.

The Ultimate Privacy of Oceania

By Anya Cooklin-Lofting

The very idea of getting away from it all, feeling soft white sand between your toes and the sound of wind amongst rustling palm leaves, is enough to ease anyone through a slow Wednesday at their desk. If you do find yourself planning a break, there is no better place to aim for than some of the most remote locations in Oceania for a complete disconnect from work and the more tedious elements of everyday life. It is this sense of remoteness that seems the most precious, revered and sought-after element of the typical Oceanian holiday. But the remoteness is purely a condition of geography, so what is it exactly that this remotely offers on an existentially alluring level? From where I’m standing, it’s privacy, and the 8,525,989 square kilometers of the countries that make up the region has a lot to offer in that department.

Privacy is one of life’s greatest luxuries, and booking a holiday somewhere that can offer this luxury is a balm to the incredibly public lives we lead. Be it on social media, in busy offices or with hectic social lives, life can start to feel like everyone wants a piece of you. So, if you’re burning the candle at both ends and would relish the opportunity to find a hit of delicious privacy, here is a round-up of some of the best, most private holiday spots in Oceania.

Australia

An untouched paradise of white sands and gently lapping blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the Cocos Keeling Islands, comprise 27 coral islands, of which only two are inhabited. Sadly, the islands declared a State of Emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, extending its travel restrictions until 30th September this year. However, of course, the Cocos Keeling Islands should remain on your radar, especially for winter sun. They are about as far away as you can get from mainland Australia within Australia itself and retain a rich cultural Malay-Muslim heritage. The islands are also brilliant for exploring weird and wonderful wildlife; the remoteness of the islands has preserved a uniquely biodiverse environment and they hold international significance for zoologists, especially when it comes to bird and marine life. Manta rays, dolphins, turtles and drongo cuckoos can be spotted by eagle-eyed visitors.

Fiji

Surely one of the most commonly cited dream holiday destinations, the Fiji archipelago is made up of 300 islands and 540 islets, each with their own distinct natural beauty. However, the Yasawa islands provide the ultimate opportunity to discover some of Fiji’s most unspoiled beaches, dramatic landscapes and beautiful coral gardens. The constellation of the six Yasawa islands offer visitors a glimpse of the platonic ideal of South Pacific perfection, so it’s unsurprising that their name is taken from one of the 15 words in Fijian meaning ‘heaven.’

One of the primary attractions of the Yasawa islands is the Blue Lagoon (or Sawa-i-Lau) caves. The somehow ecclesiastical rock formations channel light into the turquoise waters from above, inspiring absolute awe in all those lucky enough to visit. However, for the ultimate in remote holiday-making, the furthest-flung island in the Yasawa archipelago is Nalova Bay, which is said to have the very best of the Fijian beaches.

French Polynesia

The French Polynesian island of Nuku Hiva is one of the world’s most remote locations, giving visitors the very best shot at avoiding any crowds at all. It is the capital of the Marquesas Islands, which remains one of the most untouched archipelagos in the world. There is just one hotel on the island, Le Nuku Hiva by Pearl Resorts, giving guests the rare opportunity to bask in the unabated, volcanic natural beauty of the island, characterised by its dramatic valleys and scenic bays. And this natural beauty is not taken lightly by the local communities. The island is also home to the Tohua Koueva Archaeological Site, a stretch of land that has been restored to its native appearance before the arrival of Europeans.

Both an alluring and perhaps hindering travel factor to bear in mind is the journey time required to get to Nuku Hiva. It can take up to 30 hours to get from London to Tahiti Faa’a Airport, and another four hours to connect to fly to Nuku Hiva airport itself. This doesn’t take into account the hour-or-so drive from the airport into the main town, Taiohae. Although the effort to visit may be offputting to some, Nuku Hiva will certainly deliver on all other fronts.

New Zealand

Finally, it would be impossible to omit the enchanting islands of New Zealand from this list. As one of the world’s least populated countries, it earns its spot in the mix of places to escape to. The diverse landscape offers tropical scenes in the north and rugged, rolling terrain in the south. It has become known, especially in the UK, as a site of special interest for those looking for a quiet, jaw-droppingly beautiful break from the hubbub of metropolitan life, and it’s absolutely jam-packed with secluded spots. Central Otago on the South Island is home to some of the most exquisite mountainscapes in the world, which are doubly as beautiful when reflected in the clear waters of the many lakes. To the west is Fiordland, a national park inhabited by just a few dozen people who live off the grid. Places to stay are few and far between (unless you’re happy to carry a tent…), but day trips to this corner of the country from some of the small towns further inland like Manapouri are perfectly doable.
